Agentic commerce for New Zealand merchants

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is when an AI agent researches, compares or buys on a person's behalf. To be chosen, a business website must be readable by agents and make it clear how to order.

As assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot evolve from answering questions into acting as personal shoppers, they evaluate merchants directly. If an agent cannot parse your pricing, inventory, delivery areas or purchasing path, your store is easier to skip.

Why it matters for NZ merchants

Traditional e-commerce relies on human shoppers landing on your store, browsing collections and adding items to a basket. In agentic commerce, an AI assistant does the first shortlist and evaluation before a person ever sees your brand.

For New Zealand merchants, this changes what it means to be competitive online. Local advantages, like holding stock onshore, fast domestic dispatch or genuine product expertise, only count if an agent can read those facts clearly. When an agent cannot find clear terms or structured specifications, it will recommend a competitor whose website is easier to verify.

Merchant readiness checklist

Ten practical checks to make your store readable and usable by AI agents:

1. Allow AI bots

make sure your robots.txt doesn't accidentally block search and agent crawlers from product pages.

2. Plain-text pricing and stock

keep prices, currency (NZD) and stock availability readable in the HTML, not locked behind scripts or logins.

3. Product and Offer structured data

use Schema.org JSON-LD (Product and Offer) with SKU, price, currency, availability and return policy.

4. Visible delivery terms

clearly state shipping costs, domestic delivery times and coverage (for example nationwide, North or South Island, rural).

5. Clear returns and warranty terms

set out refund, return and Consumer Guarantees Act policies in plain text.

6. A clear enquiry or checkout path

provide a standard checkout or an unambiguous enquiry or booking form an assistant can follow.

7. Verified business identity

show your legal entity, trading name, physical address, contact details and NZBN in plain text and in schema.

8. Clean sitemap

keep a sitemap.xml listing all canonical product and category URLs.

9. Model guidance (llms.txt)

provide a plain-text /llms.txt summarising your main categories and customer policies.

10. Secure HTTPS

use valid certificates across the whole site, including checkout, with standard security headers.

Frequently asked questions

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is when an AI agent researches, compares or buys on a person's behalf. To be chosen, a business website must be readable by agents and make it clear how to order.

How is agentic commerce different from traditional e-commerce?

Traditional e-commerce focuses on visual design and user flow for people. Agentic commerce focuses on machine readability: structured data, crawlable product details, transparent pricing and clear checkout paths an assistant can follow.

Do I need an MCP server or API to sell to AI agents?

No. Interfaces like Model Context Protocol (MCP) or APIs let agents connect directly, but the foundation is an accessible, well-structured website that agents can browse, verify and reference using standard web protocols.
